I saw a boy? I saw a man? I saw a guy?

curious asked:

I’m writing a story, the main character is a 17 year old girl. Anyways right now she’s at a restaurant and she sees this guy. He is 22 years old and I don’t know what to say.

I looked around and noticed a boy sitting at a table across the room…. sounds like he’s younger

I looked around and noticed a man sitting at a table across the room… sounds like he’s older

I looked around and noticed a guy sitting at a table across the room… sounds like crappy writing

what can I say that sounds right?

Honest…honestly

How about “I looked around and noticed a young man sitting at a table across the room”?

Actually, if your story is first-person from a teenager’s point of view, she most likely would have said “I looked around and noticed a guy sitting at a table across the room”, or more than likely “this guy”. But it’s your story; if you’d rather have her speak more properly, I’d go with “young man”.
