Using Sheet Goods: Why “Strong, Stable, and Flat” Is a Good Thing

Posted in General on October 30th, 2008 by – Be the first to comment

We’ve talked about it a little bit already, but it’s worth repeating — “If craftsmen from 100-years ago had MDF, they would have used it for workbench tops!” Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is strong and extra heavy. small stand #2 #3 #4

pimg alt=”small stand #2 #3 #4″ src=”http://lumberjocks.com/assets/pictures/projects/39703-196×130.jpg” //ppI was given in trade an old walrus ivory cribbage board. I have worked ivory years ago for a jeweler friend and was thrilled to come across this opportunity to try my hand again. The cribbage board was broken in three sections and cracked in a couple more, along with the drilled holes for the pegs, I could only get a few small pieces to use. I did some pieces for my friend to choose from and these are the ones he didn#8217;t choose. He took the golden eagles from my last post and a couple of ear ring sets. I also gave him little stand #1 to display his eagles. Anyway, I needed some more to display my work and came up with these little stands. I like them and with my knife collection I will probably be doing more. I draw the pictures on the ivory surface with a pencil, then scratch over my drawing with a sharpened awl. Then erase drawing, flood with India ink and buff off surface, ink stays in the scratches./p
